THIS is not The Thomas Crown Affair, a film about a billionaire from the United States who manages to purloin a Claude Monet painting from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This is, however, about the real-life theft of works of art, which took place at the Radya Pustaka Museem in Solo, Central Java. The thieves stole five original stone sculptures and replaced them with replicas to cover up the crime. On Sunday last week, police arrested and detained four suspected perpetrators. (more…)

Sama-sama soal pencurian benda seni, tapi yang ini terjadi di Museum Radya Pustaka Solo, Jawa Tengah. Sang pencuri menggondol lima arca asli dan memasang yang palsu untuk menutupi aksi kejahatannya. THE story ended in an anti-climax. Following a three-hour meeting with members of the House of Representatives (DPR) from Commission I on Defense, at the offices of the Defense Department, Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono publicly denied that he had ever accused DPR members of acting as brokers in the procurement of Indonesian primary defense equipment weaponry. “What is true is that all parties must keep on guard against the possibility of brokering taking place,” said Minister Juwono, accompanied by Commission I Chairman Theo Sambuaga, when speaking to the press at the Unity in Diversity Room of the Department of Defense in Jakarta, on Monday last week. CERITA itu berakhir antiklimaks. Seusai pertemuan tiga jam dengan anggota Komisi Pertahanan DPR di gedung Departemen Pertahanan, Menteri Juwono Sudarsono membantah telah menuding anggota DPR menjadi calo pengadaan alat utama sistem persenjataan Indonesia. ”Yang benar, semua pihak harus mewaspadai kemungkinan terjadinya percaloan,” kata Juwono, didampingi Ketua Komisi I DPR Theo Sambuaga, kepada pers di Ruang Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, Departemen Pertahanan, Jakarta, Senin pekan lalu.
